Abstract: Vibrations significantly impact the ride comfort of railway vehicles. Historically, priority has been given to reducing lateral vibrations, and as a result, semi-active and active suspensions are widely used in modern high-speed railways such as Shinkansen trains. In addition to these lateral vibration reduction measures, progress in the weight reduction of carbodies and simplification of their structures has led to vertical vibration, especially carbody elastic vibrations, becoming a considerable issue, and measures to address them are now required. In this keynote presentation, the current state of elastic vibrations in railway vehicle carbodies will be presented, and some recent efforts on their numerical modeling and reduction measures will be introduced. The speaker would like to emphasize through the presentation that the vibration problems in railway vehicles are a fascinating field for researchers and engineers in vibration and the dynamics of mechanical systems, i.e., the participants in the APVC, and there is still a lot to be done.
